Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike Review (2017) – Train For Comfort

Cycling is one of the best ways to get a good workout without causing too much stress to your joints, unlike jogging. However, some of us might find the thought of biking around the city or up a mountain to be too much of a hassle – most likely due to traffic conditions or the unpredictable weather.

This is where a recumbent bike would come in handy. Recumbent bikes are great for people like me who want convenience, as I’m able to simply walk into the living room and get started on my exercise regime after a proper warm up session. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like outside or the time of day.

Having decided on the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike to be my exercise vehicle (pardon the pun) of choice, here are some of my thoughts on my time spent with it so far.

If there is one thing that I can vouch for the Schwinn 270, it would be the fact that you don’t need to be an engineer in order to piece it together right out of the box. The instructions were clear enough to get the job done without any hassle, and if you can fix something from IKEA with their instructions, the Schwinn 270 will be a walk in the park.

Build Quality

Some things are simply built to last. The old school Mercedes-Benz models that continue to ply the roads of many developing countries are a testament to German engineering and reliability.

Just like how I feel confident at the solid “thud” sound each time I close the door of a continental car, so too, does the same feeling of confidence arise from using the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike. I do not find this surprising as Schwinn would not have lasted for more than a century in business if they do not know what they are doing.

Through my experience with the Schwinn 270, I can safely vouch for its build quality. There is an overall, solid feel to it, and such gut feelings can be difficult to explain.

So far, even the most intense workouts that I have done with the Schwinn 270 haven’t caused any kind of instability. The weight of the Schwinn 270 is most likely what makes it so durable, courtesy of the high-speed, high-inertia perimeter weighted flywheel. I found the level of noise during my workouts on the Schwinn 270 to be rather muted. This is a good thing -- especially when one lives in a shoebox environment or have other light sleepers under the same roof.

Comfort Comes First

The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike has been very kind to my rear end, even during my extended workout sessions on it during the weekends and holidays. Perhaps it does help somewhat that the air conditioning system was turned on when it is hot and sweltering.

What I liked about the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike is the fact that my friends who have given it a go also told me about the level of comfort they experienced -- especially those who suffer from back problems.

This is because enhanced lower back support has been integrated into the Schwinn 270, and there is a padded seat which does not leave me with a sore backside after each workout session.

I also found the 3-piece pedal cracks that arrive complete with oversized pedals makes it extremely comfortable when performing the biking motions in a workout, my friends who tried the bike out also mentioned this to me.

I also found the 3-piece pedal cracks that arrive complete with oversized pedals makes it extremely comfortable when performing the biking motions in a workout, my friends who tried the bike out also mentioned this to me.

I noticed that the Schwinn 270’s seat can be adjusted to accommodate different postures for riders of varying height. This is one particular feature that comes in handy if more than one person uses the bike. So far, my household has had their fair share of sessions with the Schwinn 270.

Despite the frequent adjustment of the seat, it has not felt loosened in any way -- at least until now. I also didn’t notice any back and forth movement as the RPMs in the different workouts increased. This was especially refreshing because most stationary bikes have that problem. A helpful tip for those who will be sharing the bike with others; I found it useful to use strips of tape as an indicator to lock down each user’s position as opposed to making an educated guess each time.

The Little Things

It’s the small added touches that made me really happy with the Schwinn 270. For instance, the water bottle holder is easily within reach, allowing me to take a sip at my convenience. The presence of the acoustic chamber speakers also help to enhance the exercise experience (I love listening to music while riding). To make it easier to move the Schwinn 270 around the home just in case a bit of rearranging is required, transport wheels are there to save the day -- and my back.

Workout Programs and Connectivity

Whatever can be measured, can be improved. This is one of the main reasons that I decided on the Schwinn 270 for my workouts. It not only helps me to sweat it out, it does not leave me disconnected to the rest of the world while doing so. Thanks to the integrated Bluetooth function, I’m able to connect my smartphone to the Schwinn 270 in order to send all of my exercise data there. This lets me keep track of my exercise performance with each session, allowing me to tweak it accordingly -- improving where I’m able to, and avoiding any potential injuries, if any.

Trying out all the 29 programmed workouts and 25 resistance levels was certainly an impressive experience. Why the vast number of programmed workouts? I think that having more options is always better, as that makes sure that my exercise sessions will never feel boring or repetitive.

Cranking up the fun and variety factors through the vast number of programmed workouts was a shrewd move by Schwinn.

It also jives with my mood level -- there are some days when I feel as though I would like to just enjoy a slow ride, and there’s a workout program for that. If I feel stressed and love like to burn off the additional energy, then there are programs which will simulate a strenuous hill climb or different mountain rides.

When I want to go through some cardio workouts that will really get my heart pumping, then any of the 9 pre-programmed heart rate workouts on the Schwinn 270’s console will be able to do the trick.

Shortcomings

Since there is always room for improvement, I did find some areas where the Schwinn 270 could be better. While the handle grips offer heart rate monitoring, it is also compatible with a chest heart rate monitor. This opens up the door for one to choose, but unfortunately, I would need to get my own chest strap if I prefer to use a chest heart rate monitor.

The bright display of the console would certainly take some getting used to at first, so it was not a big deal for me after a while. Being IT-savvy, I had no issues navigating the interface, but it might require a slight learning curve for those who are slower on the uptake.

The Schwinn 270 comes with a power cable, so in order to take advantage of all its features and functions, I needed to hook it up to a power outlet. This limited my choice of placement in the room, unless I ran an extension cable across the space. Being plugged in overcomes the other issue with a battery pack or dynamo power: I don’t have to worry about the console’s display getting dim halfway or even unreadable.

Conclusion

Is there such a thing as the perfect recumbent bike? There never will be, otherwise the industry would have died out a long time ago. New advances in technology and an even greater level of connectivity will continue to fuel better and more functional recumbent bikes in the future. However, there doesn’t seem to be any other recumbent bike that can hold a candle to the Schwinn 270 at this point in time.

The Schwinn 270 offers a whole lot of bang for your hard earned buck by over-delivering in terms of features at this price point. In fact, feel free to look around in the high end recumbent bike market where models easily surpass the $1,000 price point. I had my eyebrows raised when I realized those more expensive models don’t come with as many programmed workouts as the Schwinn 270, and have mostly the same features. Armed with a 10 -year warranty, you’re guaranteed to have a lasting experience.

If a recumbent bike is the missing piece in your home gym, then my Schwinn 270 Recumbent bike review would help facilitate your decision of buying it.
